Larry Poland initially recalls his early schooling in Bandon, County Cork, followed by his days at Presentation Brothers College in Cork. He discusses his time at UCC and his graduation with a primary degree. He recalls the history of UCC and the Crawford during the 1920s when they worked jointly on a degree course for electrical and mechanical engineers. After World War II, the Crawford conducted a radio course until the early 1950s. A marine engineering course for Irish Shipping was established at the Crawford in the 1950s and it was the forerunner of the National Maritime Institute in Ringaskiddy. After graduation Larry spent a most interesting three months in 1958 as a student engineer with Aer Lingus and following graduation was appointed to the Crawford to lead a then small Electrical Engineering department. During his interview by the VEC, he was asked by the CEO if he could develop a telecommunications course, and he assured him that he could indeed. He humorously recalls his rather heated discussions with the powers that be about the budget for the new course, discussions that were eventually to prove successful.

The Osprey Hotel in Naas was the venue for this recording with Paul Connolly. The hotel was build on the site of The Apprentice School, which was a boarding school for boys run by the Army to educate and teach crafts to the students, aged 15 – 17 years from all over the country. Paul Connolly relates the circumstances which led to his attendance there as a student of mechanical engineering. He speaks about the schedule at the school, the various departments, such as mechanical engineering, woodworking and electrical. The school prepared its students for a trade as well as for an army career. In 1999 a reunion of his old class was organised, and it was fascinating for Paul to rediscover his comrades and to hear about their life experiences. In 1965 Paul bought himself out of the army and joined Aer Lingus as an aircraft fitter. In this recording he recounts all the aircraft which were in use by Aer Lingus in the 1960s, when all the maintenance work on the aircraft was undertaken manually. In 1968 the Viscount aircraft was replaced by the Boeing 737, which marked the beginning of the enormous changes which were to occur in Aer Lingus over the following years.

The Martin family have lived at Martry for generations. Most of Oliver’s working life was spent at Claytons Textile Company. He discusses the changes in management over the years, the staff, the work rules and regulations which were very much of the old school. He also recalls the customers and suppliers. When the company had been wound up, he continued to work with Kohn Brannigan, the new owner. He is adamant that the withdrawal of Government contracts for the supply of fabrics for Garda and Army uniforms, for Aer Lingus seat covers, and for upholstery fabrics in general, led to the gradual decline of the Claytons business.
