On November 13 1647, 8,200 troops of the Irish Confederate Forces, led by Lord Taaffe of Curraw, County Sligo, and Sir Alistair MacDonald of Scotland, engaged 5,200 troops of Parliamentary forces led by Lord Inchiquin of Thomond at Knockanuss near Kanturk, Co Cork. Approximately 3,500 men were killed, making this battle the bloodiest of the Confederate Wars. Local historian Desmond Sharpe-Bolster and Hugh Burke, relive this dreadful battle.

The historic castle of Dunboy, seat of the O'Sullivan Beare, near Castletownbere in West Cork is steeped in history. It was the last stronghold in the south west of Ireland to fall to Elizabethan forces under Sir George Carew in 1602. The famous and heroic siege of Dunboy is eloquently recalled by Connie, who brings to life for us these extraordinary events of four hundred years ago.

The town of Kinsale, County Cork, played a vital role in Irish history, and this year sees the four hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Kinsale in 1601. The northern Earls, O'Neill and O'Donnell, fighting side by side with their Spanish allies, lost to the English. John Thullier, a local historian, has made a study of this decisive period in Irish history his life's work. Early on a spring morning, to meet John, I travelled to Kinsale and relived the build-up to the battle which took place four hundred years ago.
