Mary Markey (Nee Ryan) is a native of Loughshinney. She has a vivid memory of the fishermen`s thatched homes where their families were reared. Each house had its own garden which provided most of the food necessary to sustain the large families. Women in the area were generally given a box of prawns to shell, and in the evenings the men would gather at the cross-roads at the top of the village. She also discusses some of the tragedies which took place at sea, and a ghost story which is related to one of these tragedies.
